Description

Summary:

It takes a special breed of man to stand quiet and calm in a landing craft and look death in the face as the L/C edges in towards the beach.

In a second or two the ramp will smash down in the surf. Every man aboard can see that beach – 50 yards of bullet-lashed, shell-torn sand, and beyond that the layers of barbed wire, the concrete ramparts, and pillboxes, the gun emplacements.

The Germans are ready and waiting, confident in the strength of their massive defences.

In one of the landing craft a man called Ches Nolan waits with the other Commandos for the shout – “Ramp down! Hit the beach!” And Ches wonders what he will do when the time comes – for he knows his father was branded a coward.
