Summary:
With a roar like the crack of doom the explosive charges went up. On the bridge, the Japanese railway engine stopped as if hit by a giant fist, in a cloud of smoke and steam. Then the smoke cleared and there was the engine, and the giant gun it was towing, still on the bridge, as large as life. The two British soldiers watching from the undergrowth gritted their teeth and cursed. They were the army’s best sabotage team, and all their explosives had gone into that bang . . . and it hadn’t worked.
Or had it? On the bridge a Japanese soldier shivered as a solitary timber creaked . . . then another . . . and another . . .
