To get from base to target and back again, pilots depended on their navigators to work out their courses. And without maps, charts, sextant and compass most of these highly-trained men would be totally lost.
But all that equipment isn’t always necessary, as one crashed Catalina flying boat crew were to discover. They found out that the natives of the Pacific islands knew more than they did – and could plot a course over hundreds of miles of ocean by almost sheer instinct!
