Right in the line of enemy fire, crouched in his observation post, Pete Ryder would risk life and limb to carry out his duties – to radio the Germans’ positions back to the British guns. This was dangerous enough, but when ordered to do his spotting from an unarmed plane flying low over the battlefield it put the plane, the pilot and himself smack in the middle of the enemy sights!
