Summary:
The order was clear – all British troops in Hong Kong were to surrender to the Japanese. Sergeant Andy Rioch received the order, understood it – but had no intention of obeying it. After all, he and his platoon were Royal Lowlanders, and Royal Lowlanders never surrendered.
The nearest friendly unit was hundreds of miles away on mainland China, separated from them by the Japanese army and feuding Chinese warlords. Andy’s decision was easy – “We fight on . . .”
