His name was Arturo Spinelli – a colonel in the Italian Air Force, leader of a swarm of SM-79 torpedo-bombers. Sailors used to say that when Spinelli got his sights on an Allied ship it could count its remaining life in minutes. Not for nothing was he called Convoy Killer.
