Many boys yearned for the glamour of R.A.F. life during the Second World War – like Smudger Green, a fifteen-year-old lad who just couldn’t wait to get behind the controls of a Lancaster bomber.
His first meeting with a Lancaster pilot was far from friendly, however, for Flight-Lieutenant Tod Brogan reckoned youngsters were just a confounded nuisance.
But later the boy proved he had so much courage that Tod paid him the biggest compliment any pilot could – he named his place and its crew “Smudger’s Gang”!
