Take any Japanese uniform belt buckle. On it there’s the crest of the Rising Sun.

If you put that buckle in a fire until it’s red-hot, the Rising Sun glows as though on a branding iron.

Flight Lieutenant Mike Thornton carried such a brand on his brow. Every time he looked in a mirror he saw it and swore to get his own back on the man who’d done it – Captain Tanaka of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
