The Second World War was nearly over. The remnants of the once-mighty German army, scattered and war-weary, were being rounded up by the advancing Allies.

Werner Hertz was as keen as any German soldier to stay out of the hands of the vengeful Russians. An experienced woodsman, he tried to keep out of sight of the Americans too. He even avoided his own countrymen whenever possible.

For Werner was a man who simply wanted to be alone. Not easy in a dangerous war zone . . .
