It was a hard, dangerous job searching the stormy darkness of the English Channel for airmen who had ditched in the freezing waters. The Royal Air Force rescue launch skippered by Flight-Lieutenant Peter Marsham was reckoned to be one of the best and the crew had proved it time and time again, plucking both friend and foe from the waves.

They would need every ounce of their skill now as yet another call for help was radioed in. A transport aircraft with some very senior officers aboard had gone down in the drink and rescued they had to be – for they knew vital military secrets.

And the enemy were also hunting for them . . .
