Ironbottom Sound – a name feared by sailors in the South Pacific. Old salts claimed it was called this because of the number of ships sunk there in that hostile stretch of water close to the Solomon Islands. This was long before the Japanese arrived in 1942, when even more than ships were to perish.

But one Catalina flying boat crew from the Royal Australian Air Force was determined to salvage something from those dangerous waters – to help their American allies drive back the yellow invaders.
