Jack Conroy was one of many young lads who immediately volunteered to join the Army when the Great War broke out in 1914. But, after tragedy struck during basic training, he knew he couldn’t face the horror of hand-to-hand combat, and trained instead as a medical orderly. He now hoped to save lives – not take them.
