Summary:

Lieutenant Freddy Lynch advanced cautiously, his hands raised. All around him in the cold, dawn light the mountain was coming alive as scowling figures appeared from every nook and cranny, every one clutching a gun.

This was Freddy’s introduction to the mountain partisans of Yugoslavia, the fighters who were to be his allies. At least, Freddy’s chief in London had said they were his allies. But looking at them, Freddy wasn’t so sure . . .
